DirecTV & Viacom Blackout Dispute

Follow the paper trail.. I Can’t believe people buy into this.. To me it’s pretty obvious that DirectTV didn’t just “drop” MTV, VH1, Nick.. they dropped them because Viacon (the company who owns the rights to these shows/channels) wants a bigger royalty check. These SHARKS *couf* Viacom think it’s ok to turn the table around and put the blame on DirecTV by launching this massive marketing campaign called “When DIRECTV Drops”. Below is what Viacom announced via facebook not too long ago..

DIRECTV is dropping channels..again. We’re very disappointed, especially since we’ve been working to come to a resolution, even granting DIRECTV a deal extension. We simply can’t understand why DirecTV doesn’t value the channels its subscribers watch the most.

Viacom is 20% of DirecTV’s viewership, and only 5% of its programming costs. We over deliver for DirecTV, but are hugely undervalued. Our most recent offer to DirecTV asks for what amounts to pennies a day for 26 channels, and we remain willing to negotiate.

The fact is that DIRECTV would rather fight than work to make a fair deal with Viacom. In the past three years, DIRECTV has fought publicly and bitterly with seven different programmers. During the same period, Viacom has made dozens of deals peacefully and productively, without a single fight. The record speaks for itself.
